Aluminium, then, has justified the launching of this large, ambitious and costly programme. But in the process, cheap electricity became available for other industrial development—more than three-fifths of the country's population lives in the southern third of Ghana. Here are all the large towns—Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Sekondi—together with the areas where gold, manganese and diamonds are obtained and where hardwood timber is exploited in the rain-forest area. It is also the part of Ghana important for the growing of cocoa which up to now has been the basis of the country's economy.
But it is the provision of cheap electricity, and the resultant effects upon industrialisation, that is all important and gives Ghana a much better chance of diversifying its economy in this way than is the case with other newly independent African countries. Ghana is, in fact, far from typical of tropical Africa as a whole. It is a country that has long experienced the accumulation of capital resources through the prosperity, over many years, of cocoa-farming. Two-fifths of the world's cocoa comes from Ghana, and cocoa has long been the backbone of the country's economy.
The quantity estimates are projected forward for several years in line with the expected market expansion. Any local peculiarities of service conditions and customer preference are noted.
